Why Compost?
Composting is awesome, but why do we love it so much?
A large portion of our garbage is actually food waste, most of which goes to a landfill. It is crazy that our food waste becomes garbage at all! One of the easiest things you can do to reduce your impact on the environment is to start or support a compost pile.
For us, we love using compost at our student farm site and it is healthy for our plants. Compost is not only great for building soil structure, it also provides a source of nutrients, a habitat for a beneficial micro and macro community, keeps the soil from drying out, and so much more. Its like magic!
Food waste is an excellent source of compost because we can put back in the soil what we are taking out when we harvest our crops. This reduces our dependence on imported or off site fertilizer and it helps keep the weeds under control.
For our society, it just makes sense to put that food waste back to work. By recycling our food wastes, we help help out the environment, and make it easier to grow food that is healthy for our bodies.
