About the Project
SOFT (Student Organic Farm Training) was awarded $10,000 from the GSO (Graduate Student Organization) at UH Manoa a to complete a composting project here on campus.
The idea is to collect on campus food waste to turn into compost at the student farm site. This compost is used on the student farm as a soil amendment.
With this project, we hope to one day collect all of the food waste that is generated on campus and turn it into compost.
Currently, the food waste on the UH Manoa campus is being thrown into a landfill or being hauled away by Eco-Feed.
This project is a student initiative that was the brainchild of SOFT and the Landscaping Department.
We hope that, with this project, we can increase awareness about our food waste issues as well as make a positive impact on our environment.
We currently have a food waste collection station in the Sustainability Courtyard on campus. This functions as our public informational site where the campus community can get involved at the ground level. We also provide a dish washing station for those who choose to bring reusable eating tools.
To supplement our food waste from the courtyard, we also collect food waste from the cafeteria on campus. We are currently working along side Sodexo to reduce the amount of food waste they need to haul off site.
